A 15-year-old boy and a 33-year-old vegetable trader were killed in a roadside bomb attack in the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) controlled area in Nedunkeni, Olumadhu in Nedunkerni in Vavuniya north at 4.00pm Thursday, 28 August 2008 by the Sri Lankan government Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) on his way to his farm.

In the meantime, fishermen of Chemmalai in the Mullaithivu district were attacked by the SLA at sea. According to the fishermen, they had spread their nets at 3.00am yesterday morning and were waiting when the Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) arrived at 6.00pm and began attacking. More than 16 Dvora boats of the SLN attacked the fishermen. The boats belonging to the fishermen were destroyed and the fishermen were forced to swim to safety. The fisherman also lost their valuable nets in the attack.

Sri Lankan Security forces (SF) are known to have infiltrated into many times in the LTTE controlled areas and carried out ambush attacks on civilians including elected officials, religious leaders, and journalists and aid workers a local aid worker told TNS in Vanni.

Rev. Father M X Karunaratnam, the chairman of the Northeast Secretariat on Human Rights (NESoHR) was killed by the DPU in April this year. Fr. Karunartnam was the foremost Human Rights activist in Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam controlled Vanni. NESoHR was the only body in Vanni to report and voice for the Human Rights of the Tamil people in the Northeast.

Three decades old civil war in Sri Lanka killed at least 215,000 people according to the surveys done by the UN World Health Organization.
