The Daily Nation in Kenya revealed that the 40 million Shilling annual credit frauds in the country is shared by Sri Lanka’s liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam terrorists with other fraudsters.

Reporting about a Norwegian Passport holding LTTE member the newspaper said, “Early this year, a suspected operative of the Sri Lankan separatist terror group LTTE, Balakumar Poluthurai was arrested at 680 Hotel after he attempted to pay his bills using different fake credit cards. He is also believed to have withdrawn an unknown amount of cash using the cards.”

He is also believed to have withdrawn an unknown amount of cash using the cards and had 72 fake credit cards, when arrested the newspaper reported, July 25.

The African newspaper further said, “On July 8 this year, Delhi police busted a credit fraud syndicate and arrested three Nigerians who were using cloned cards to buy expensive mobile phones. The Delhi Police recovered mobile phones with instructions and PIN numbers from Kenya.

“These incidents are just a fraction of credit and ATM card fraud cases perpetrated by an increasing number of organised international and local syndicates. So serious is the problem that the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) regularly posts advisories to visiting staff to be careful whenever they use credit cards in Kenya.

“According to the Kenya Credit and Debit Card Association Chairp Catherine Mogambi, of the Sh35 billion transacted through credit cards in 2007 in Kenya, about Sh40 million is lost to credit card fraudsters annually.”

Waiters, cashiers, petrol station attendants and other staff who handle cards are believed to work with the fraudsters in swiping cards from customers through a gadget that “reads” the account information encoded in the magnetic strip at the back, then make duplicate cards.
Cases abound of ATM card holders who find thousands of shillings withdrawn from their accounts at night in places they have never been to.

And more often than not, the victims stop following up on their money due to lengthy investigation processes, the report further said. And, according to the head of the Banking Fraud Investigations Unit, Paul Ndambuki, the syndicates are mainly operated by people from Eastern Europe, West Africa and Asia, in collaboration with Kenyans. Several cases of credit card fraud by syndicates operating in Kenya have been detected in the United Arab Emirates and Dubai, the newspaper said in its issue of July 25.

“Most of the cases involve international credit cards lost in Europe, but transactions are conducted in Kenya. However, we have been receiving several reports from victims in Kenya who report that withdrawals were made from their bank accounts although they had their ATM cards when it happened,” he said.

SLAF MI-24 helicopter gunships Friday (July 25) have totally neutralized an LTTE mortar launching pad located 3.5km Southwest of Tunukkai in the Mullaittiuvu district, during close-fire-support missions launched assisting the advancing ground troops.
According to Air Force Spokesperson Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara, 4 Mi-24 helicopter gunships have engaged in the daunting mission at around 3.45p.m., despite an array of LTTE counter fire.

The target was located at an abandoned construction site and ground troops also confirmed that the LTTE mortar shelling have died away following the air assault, the Spokesperson further added.

Heavy fighting between Sri Lankan government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels along the front lines of their civil war killed 62 rebels and eight soldiers, the military said Saturday.

The fighting occurred throughout Friday in the Vavuniya, Jaffna, Welioya and Mullaitivu districts bordering the rebels’ de facto state in the north, said Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara, the military spokesman.

In the worst clashes, soldiers repulsed a pre-dawn rebel attack in the Mullaitivu district that occurred hours after government forces captured rebel-held territory near a key supply route, Nanayakkara said.

Troops killed 33 rebels in the battle and recovered all of the bodies, he said.

Separate battles in Vavuniya killed 16 guerrillas and eight soldiers, while 12 rebels died in Welioya and another rebel was killed in Jaffna, Nanayakkara said.

Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan was not immediately available for comment. Both sides routinely exaggerate their enemy’s death toll while underreporting their own.

It was not possible to independently verify the military reports because the government has barred most journalists from the northern jungles where much of the fighting takes place.

Fighting has escalated in recent months after government officials vowed to crush the rebels and seize their de facto state by the end of the year. Although the military gains against the Tamil Tigers have been relatively modest, troops in recent weeks have seized a string of key towns and rebel bases, consistently chipping away at the guerrillas’ power base.

The Tamil Tigers have been fighting for an independent state in the nation’s north and east since 1983, following decades of marginalization by governments dominated by the Sinhalese majority. More than 70,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

LTTE's Muhamalai-I

LTTE casualties over 100. 18 SLA also killed. Army collects pieces of LTTE remains in sacks.

LTTE casualties in the Vavunikulam battle is over 100 killed and at least another 100 injured, sources in the Army confirmed to DefenceWire a few hours ago. After this battle, Tiger leaders have been requesting their cadres not to engage in and further fighting with the Security Forces saying that they have now ‘reverted back to a unilateral cease-fire’.

The number of LTTE casualties has increased after mop-up operations to route a remaining team following the two main confrontations at Vaunikulam, namely for the bund and against a retaliatory attack to save trapped Charles Anthony units. The Sri Lanka Army lost 18 men, including a junior officer.

The Deputy Leader of the Charles Anthony unit, named Pallavan, was a very prominent leader in the LTTE involved in defending Thoppigala alongside ‘Col.’ Jeyam and a team of LTTE’s ‘Special Forces’. Pallavan is an eastern cadre, whose loyalty to the LTTE leader was so high that he was given the reins of Charles Anthony unit, which comprises of mainly northern cadres.

Meanwhile SLA clearing operations south of Mallavi have amassed several sacks of hands, fingers and limbs of dead tigers, whose corpses have been reduced to rubble in Thursday’s firefight. Large blood stains are visible in dry patches of earth. The stench of the rotting corpses has attracted wild carnivorous animals. Field Commanders confirmed that at this rate, the Army will be able to reach Kilinochchi within the next three months.

Meanwhile troops from 4 Special Forces last afternoon ambushed a tractor load of Tigers Northwest of Weli Oya. The exact number of LTTE casualties is not clear. The Navy, after a long silence on Thursday ventured into LTTE controlled areas south of Mulaithivu and engaged an LTTE boat movement using small teams of the Special Boat Squadron, Dvora FACs and a Fast Missile Cruiser. Navy confirmed 3 boats out of 10 were completely destroyed along with the crew.
